Game Changer: Kenya Shujaa and Lioness ditch single use plastic in training

The whistle blows, the training session is intense, and hydration is paramount. For years, this scene across countless sports fields worldwide meant one thing: a mountain of discarded 500ml plastic water bottles at the end of the day. But for Kenya's national rugby teams the mighty Kenya Shujaa 7s and the fierce Kenya Lionesses 7s – that era of plastic waste is now a relic of the past, thanks to the vision of one man: Kevin Wekesa and his "Play Green" initiative. It started with a simple observation from Kevin during a national team training camp: the sheer volume of plastic waste generated just from water bottles. "After training, it was just a mess," he recalls. Driven by his environmental passion, which mirrors his commitment on the rugby pitch, Kevin initiated a powerful, yet simple, solution: reusable bottles.

From Waste to Win

The Bottle Revolution Kevin spearheaded the provision of durable, branded reusable aluminum water bottles to every single player and support staff member of both the men's and women's national sevens teams. This wasn't just a handout; it was a fundamental shift in hydration strategy. The leadership shown by the Kenya 7s players and Lionesses, proudly sporting their "Play Green with Kevin Wekesa" bottles, sends a powerful message. It's a testament that environmental action is not a sideline issue, but a core part of what it means to be a champion, on and off the field. This ripple effect, starting with our national heroes, is setting a new standard for sports sustainability in Kenya and beyond. Join us in celebrating this significant step forward and become part of the movement to ditch plastic, one refill at a time.
